During last 24 hours the solar flaring activity was rather low with only two B-class and one C-class flares reported. The source region of the GOES C1.6 flare (peaking at 05:21 UT this morning) was the Catania sunspot group 71 (NOAA AR 2987) which was at the moment of flaring situated at the center of the solar disc. We expect such a low level of the flaring activity to persist in the coming hours. The C-class flare observed this morning was associated with the coronal dimming and EIT wave (on disc signatures of the CME), and the metric type II radio burst, signature of the coronal shock wave. The full halo CME was first observed in the SOHO/LASCO C2 filed of view already at about 05:48 UT, and it had projected plane-of-the-sky speed of about 500 km/s. Due to the position of its source region (center of the solar disc) this halo CME is probably Earth directed and its arrival can be expected in the afternoon of April 14. No other Earth-directed CMEs were detected in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels, and the greater than 2 MeV electron flux was under the 1000 pfu threshold, we expect them to remain on these levels in the comming hours. The 24h electron fluence is at normal to moderate level and we expect it will stay so in the coming 24 hours.
Earth is still inside the fast solar wind with the velocity of about 515 km/s, and the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude of about 5 nT. The glancing blow from the CME observed in the early morning of April 7 is still possible during the comming hours, but not very probable. Presently the geomagnetic conditions are quiet to unsettled and we expect them to stay so in the coming hours.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 011, based on 17 stations.
