Bulletin

Solar x-ray flux flatlined near the B2-level, with no flares observed during the last 24 hours. The currently visible sunspot groups are small with little signs of growth. A small filament eruption took place near the Central Meridian (CM) on 17 January, starting around 20:30UT. Some coronal dimming was observed, but currently available coronagraphic imagery from SOHO and STEREO-A do not show an associated earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME).

Mostly quiet flaring conditions are expected, with only a small chance on an isolated C-class flare. Solar wind speed showed an overall declining trend and varied between 350 and 300 km/s. Bz varied slowly between -5 and +4 nT, and the Interplanetary Magnetic Field was directed mostly away from the Sun. Quiet geomagnetic conditions were observed. A southern polar coronal hole (CH) extension is transiting the CM.

Quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected, with active episodes possible as a result of the faint and slow 14 January CME which is expected to arrive on 19 January.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 045, based on 12 stations.
