Bulletin

Over the past 24 hours solar activity has been low. The largest flare was a C9.6 class flare. NOAA Active Region (AR) 2488 (Macintosh class:Dao; Mag. type:Beta-Gamma) has been most active, producing 4 C-class flares, including the C9.6 class flare, which peaked at 12:02 UT. ARs 2488, 2489 and 2490 all appear stable but have exhibited some flux emergence. There is currently a positive Northern polar coronal hole located in the North-West that may increase solar wind speeds. There were a series of small Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) off of the West limb, none of these are expected to interact with the Earth system. No Earth directed CMEs have been detected. Solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with a high probability of C-class flares and a low probability of M-class flares. The solar wind speed has decreased from around 360 to 300 km/s over the past 24 hours. The total magnetic field strength has remained around 5 nT. The Bz component fluctuated around 0 nT, ranging between -5 and +5 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 0-1 (NOAA) and local K index 0-2 (Dourbes). A positive polar coronal hole is currently positioned in the Western hemisphere of the Sun and the resulting high-speed stream (HSS) may enhance solar wind speeds later today and as a consequence may increase geo-activity levels.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 063, based on 11 stations.
