Bulletin

Over the past 24 hours solar activity has been low. The largest flare was a B4.2 class flare. No other significant flares have been recorded. NOAA Active Region (AR) 2524 (Macintosh class:Eso; Mag. type:Beta) has been quiet, however a currently unnamed AR on the East limb produced a couple of B-class flares, including the aforementioned B4.2 class flare. AR 2524 appears stable but has exhibited some flux emergence. No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been detected. Solar proton levels have remained at background levels over the past 24 hours. Solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with a chance of C-class flares and a low probability of M-class flares. However, the AR on the East limb may increase flaring activity in the coming days. The solar wind speed has fluctuated around 450 km/s over the past 24 hours. The total magnetic field strength has remained largely around 5 nT. The Bz component was largely positive, fluctuating between -5 and +8 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 1-3 (NOAA) and local K index 1-3 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours. There is currently a large Northern polar coronal hole that has a small extension to lower latitudes in the Western hemisphere; this may enhance solar wind speeds at the Earth over the coming days. However, the Northern polar coronal hole also has a large extension to lower latitudes near disk center, which will increase solar wind speeds around 26-Mar-2016.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 029, based on 10 stations.
