Double impulsive X-class flares

Two X-class solar flares (X1.1 and X1.3) took place during the past 24 hours peaking at 22:03 UTC (31 May) and 08:48 UTC (1 June). These were impulsive events which originated from sunspot region 3697. Both of these events were not eruptive and did not launch coronal mass ejections.

Sunspot region 3697 is however in an earth-facing position right now and any future eruptive solar flares will likely launch earth-directed coronal mass ejections. Sunspot region 3697 has decayed quite a bit since it was sunspot region 3664 but this was of course expected. It does have a complex Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic layout with one large delta structure. M and/or low-level X-class activity remains possible in the days ahead.
