It took a little while but the sunspot group that we told you to watch out for yesterday has woken up! Sunspot region 2158 was the source of a long duration M4.5 (R1-moderate) solar flare that peaked today at 00:29 UTC.
Coronal Mass Ejection
Coronagraph imagery from SOHO/LASCO is still limited but a the beginning of what looks like an asymmetrical halo Coronal Mass Ejection is starting to become visible which suggest that this solar flare indeed produced a Coronal Mass Ejection that is at least partially directed towards Earth. The bulk of the CME looks to head north-east but there does seem to be an earth-directed component. More information on this will be posted later today as more imagery becomes available.
Solar Radiation Storm
We also issue a warning for a possible Solar Radiation Storm. The ammount of high energy protons near Earth are already elevated and we could cross the S1 threshold with this latest eruption.
