The solar activity has been quiet over the past 24 hours. The sunspot group (NOAA 2718) remained stable and no significant flare has been recorded. Quiet flaring conditions are expected for the next 24-hour period.
No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejection has been observed. The solar protons flux remained at nominal levels over the past 24 hours and is expected to remain so.
The solar wind measurements remained enhanced due to the influence of the solar wind associated to the Coronal Hole (which has crossed the central meridian on August 11). The wind speed fluctuated between 450 km/s to 500 km/s; The interplanetary magnetic field strength showed a global decrease from about 7.5 nT to below 5 nT; The Southward magnetic component fluctuated between -6 and 5 nT. The enhanced solar wind conditions are expected to persist for the next 24 hours and start to decline on August 18 after noon. An equatorial coronal hole of negative polarity has reached the central meridian today around 05:00 UT, the fast solar wind speed from this coronal hole is expected to arrive in about 3 days.
Due to the enhanced solar wind conditions, the geomagnetic conditions was manly unsettled (K-Dourbes index was ranging between 1 and 3, and Kp index was between 2 and 3 with a short period of 4 between 06:00 - 09:00 UT on August 17). Unsettled conditions is expected until while the Earth remains under the influence of the solar wind associated to the coronal hole (which has crossed the central meridian on August 11). The geomagnetic conditions will then slowly begin to return to the nominal value tomorrow.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 012, based on 26 stations.
