The solar activity was at low levels over the past 24 hours with the X-ray flux below B-level. A newly emerged sunspot is visible on the solar disc in the South-East quadrant. This sunspot is not numbered by NOAA and Catatonia yet. The solar activity is expected to remain at low levels for the next 24 hours with a small chance of C-class flare from the newly emerge sunspots.
No earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been identified in available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values.
The high-speed streams from the south polar coronal hole continued to slightly influence the solar wind environment near Earth. The solar wind parameters show mostly slow solar wind speed regime with minor enhancement: the solar wind speed ranged between 330 km/s and 400 km/s with a peak of about 414 km/s around 04:00 UTC (on March 08), the total interplanetary magnetic field ranged between 2.3 nT and 7.1 nT, and the southward component fluctuated between -3.9 nT and 6.9 nT. The solar wind environment is expected to remain mostly in the slow wind speed regime with some minor enhancements due to the influence of the south polar coronal hole high- speed streams. The southern polar coronal hole shows an extension reaching 30 degree latitude south, which is currently facing Earth. The high-speed streams coming from that extension will influence the solar wind condition near Earth by further enhancing the solar wind parameters in about 3 days from now.
The geomagnetic conditions were quiet with few periods of unsettled condition observed by Dourbes station (K-Dourbes = 3). We expect the geomagnetic conditions to remain mostly quiet with possible periods of unsettled condition.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 014, based on 17 stations.
