Bulletin

Solar activity was at very low levels. NOAA Active Region (AR) 2924 (Catania group 1) produced a B-class flare and continued to decay. NOAA AR 2925 (Catania group 2) also decayed and did not produce any noticeable activity. NOAA AR 2927 did not produce any flare activity above A-class flares, but is expected to be more active in the next 24 hours. A, yet unnumbered, AR (possibly NOAA AR 2921 returning to Earth view) has appeared at N29E89 but has not produced any noticeable activity so far.

No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been observed in the available coronagraph data.

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal levels in the past 24 hours and is expected to remain so in the next 24 hours. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux dropped below the 1000 pfu alert threshold during the last 24 hours and is expected to remain below this threshold for the next 24 hours. The 24h electron fluence also dropped at nominal levels during the last 24 hours and is expected to remain below the threshold for the next 24 hours.

The solar wind parameters are still under the influence of the High Speed Stream (HSS) that arrived on 17 UT Jan 08. The total magnetic field magnitude oscillated between 0.5 and 6 nT, while its Bz component varied between -4 and 4 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field phi angle oscillated between negative and positive values almost in equal measure. The solar wind speed gradually dropped from 510 to 410 km/s during the last 24 hours. The solar wind conditions are expected to slowly return to a slow wind regime in the next 24 hours.

Geomagnetic conditions were globally quiet to moderate (NOAA Kp 1-3) and locally quiet (K Manhay index 1-2). Geomagnetic conditions are expected to be quiet for the next 24 hours.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 060, based on 10 stations.
