The Sun released twelve C flares during the past 24 hours, all but two produced by NOAA AR 2242, which now has beta-gamma-delta configuration. The brightest flare was a C5.6 flare released by AR 2242 peaking at 11:40 UT on December 16. In the next 24 hours, C flaring and an occasional M flare are possible, especially from AR 2242 and 2241. After having increased from about 410 to 540 km/s on December 15, the solar wind speed observed by ACE decreased again to its current value of about 410 km/s. The magnitude of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) decreased from about 10 to 6 nT. Over the past 24 hours, geomagnetic conditions were quiet (K Dourbes between 1 and 3; NOAA Kp between 1 and 3). Quiet geomagnetic levels (K Dourbes < 4) are expected on December 16, 17 and 18.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 122, based on 11 stations.
