Bulletin

Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours. An M1.3 flare was observed from beyond the east limb, peaking at 07:53 UT. There were also a number of C-class flares which were almost all associated with the same active region that is just beginning to rotate onto the solar disk (S30E88). Two new regions have emerged near the central meridian, NOAA Active Regions (AR) 3004 and 3005. Catania sunspot groups 89 and 92 (NOAA ARs 3001 and 2999) were quiet and stable. The flaring activity is expected to be at low levels with C-class flares probable and a chance for M-class flares, particularly from the new region rotating onto the disk.

No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been observed in the available coronagraph data.

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal levels in the past 24 hours and is expected to remain so in the next 24 hours. The greater than 2MeV electron flux exceeded the 1000 pfu threshold and is expected to exceed threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24h electron fluence was at normal to moderate levels and is expected to be at normal to moderate levels over the next 24 hours.

The solar wind speed (as recorded by ACE) continued to be slightly elevated, ranging between 400 and 500 km/s. The total magnetic field magnitude fluctuated around 3 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field phi angle was predominantly in the negative sector (directed towards the Sun). The solar wind speed is expected to continue to gradually decrease and reflect a slow solar wind regime for the next 48 hours.

Geomagnetic conditions were quiet. Geomagnetic conditions are expected to be quiet to unsettled over the next 48 hours.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 088, based on 21 stations.
