A total of 5 numbered sunspot groups were identified on the disk over the past 24 hours. Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with only C-class flares identified. The largest flare was a C8.2 flare (SIDC Flare 3004) peaking at 07:34 UTC, from an AR rotating into view from the east limb.
No Earth directed CMEs were observed in the last 24 hours. A backsided full halo CME was observed at 16:00 UTC on 17 December, it will not arrive to the Earth.
The solar wind at Earth is still disturbed from the 17 December ICME arrival, with solar wind speeds around 650 km/s (SOHO CELIAS) and interplanetary magnetic field around 8 nT (DSCOVR). A slow return into solar wind conditions is expected for the next hours, and a possible arrival of one more ICME (corresponding to a CME from 15 December).
Geomagnetic conditions have reached active levels both locally and globally (K_Bel and Kp up to 4). More disturbed geomagnetic conditions can be expected in the next 24 hours with the possible arrival of the 15 December CME.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was below the threshold level over the past 24 hours. It is expected to remain below the threshold level over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux measured by GOES 16 and GOES 18 remained below the threshold level in the last 24 hours. It is expected to remain so over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence is presently at normal levels and is expected to remain so over the next 24 hours.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 116, based on 10 stations.
